Tom pretty well covered it. If you have a sharpener and setter, overset a blade, say, 28 thouhs. Cut with this one blade, take it off and sharpen it and cut some more. Keep doing this and you will find the sweet spot combo of species and set for your mill. Can't say for softwood, for poplar I get best results at 20 thouhs, oak at 17.
